"bussionary"

Scott Lewis a husband and father of four children under the age of 13 calls himself a "bussionary": a missionary who uses his skills in business to help fulfill the Great Commission.

After a mission trip to Albania, Scott and his wife, Kirsten, decided to sell their small tool business in California to go into full-time ministry. "I've always shared my faith in my business every chance I could," says Scott, "but I thought if I could do it full-time, then I could really make my life count for God."

Surprisingly, Scott sensed God saying no. Instead, he kept the business and used it to fund the ministry in Albania. Together, the young couple set a goal to give $50,000 the following year—more than 100 percent of their income. The Lord blessed their faith, so they increased their goal the year afterward.

Since then, Scott and Kirsten have given more than $1 million to help fulfill the Great Commission. In addition to giving their finances, Scott lends his time to Campus Crusade, using his gift of public speaking to address History's Handful conferences. He has also told his story around the world. Whenever possible, his home-schooling wife goes with him, and together they tell how God has used many facets of their life for His glory. "We have been experiencing more meaning and purpose in our Christian life than we ever did before," raves Scott.

God started working in Scott and Kirsten's lives in 1991.

At a wedding he overheard a gentleman talking about Russia and people coming to know Christ through a film called "Jesus." That led to an introduction to The Jesus Film and his being included as part of a film team in Mexico where over 400 people sat in the rain and watched the film in their native language. Over 186 people made decisions for Christ at that showing and Scott's reaction was "Wow! This is the most powerful evangelistic tool I have ever seen." Six weeks later he and Kirsten were in Albania and the response was so great that they felt the Lord was calling them to go full-time to minister in Albania, so he tried to sell his business. Early one morning, God was clearly impressing on him that He did not want them to sell the business and go to Albania, but wanted them to use the business as a tool to fund the ministry in Albania.

Shortly thereafter, they were with Dr. Bill Bright as he challenged men and women to give an extraordinary gift to fund the Great Commission. In their wildest dreams they did not think they could ever give a million dollars but that is what they were impressed by the Lord to do. Later that night he asked, "How do I do this, Bill?" Bill said, "How much did you give last year?" "Well," Scott said, "I gave $17,000 which is about 35% of our income." Bill asked, "Why don't you start out with a goal the first year of $50,000." Scott was skeptical and a little overwhelmed but said, "Okay, we'll go for it." The next year they had given $20,000 but on December 29th they had no idea how they were going to make their goal of $50,000. Scott thought, "You know, if I write this check, I have given away all the profit of the business.

How am I ever going to grow this business where I can give a million dollars if I am giving away all the profits?" He hesitated and then called his secretary and said, "Quick, write the check before I change my mind." She made it out and sent it. The next day they were closed but two of the employees turned the sign around, unlocked the door, and started answering the phones. "We did $65,000 that day in business. $27,000 of that was profit. God revealed himself in a marvelous way." The next year there were no miracle deals at the end of the year. My secretary camped out for a day in the office doing the payable and receivable and came back out and said, "We have given $57,000 up to this point. We are $43,000 shy of the commitment and it is almost exactly what we have in the account. If we write the check, we will deplete the account entirely. So how do you run a business without cash flow?" Scott went home and talked to Kristen and she said, "Well, I am a signer on the account, and if you do not write the check, I will." That was his answer and together they wrote the check. By the end of this year they will be over the $600,000 mark that God has given them the privilege of giving. Scott says, "It is fun now when we make a profit that we get to go shopping. But we do not go to the local mall. We go shopping around the world to see how we can reach more people for Christ."
