WH Beach Fire
Department Teaches Fire Prevention
|
Every year the fire department has an ongoing effort to
teach fire prevention to our community. This is done through various ways.
The best way we found is through the children. |

|
The WH Beach Fire Dept. was lucky enough to
purchase a *Fire Safety Trailer through public donations after the 1995
wild fires. With this we go to schools and teach the children fire
safety. |

* The Fire Safety Trailer was purchased solely from donations made to the
department after the large 1995 Wild Fires. We thought through because of
the generous support from the community and surrounding districts we wanted to
give it back to the community in some way. With this we purchased a large trailer
that actually simulates a real house. Inside there is a full kitchen, living
room, fireplace, staircase, bedroom, hallway, light switches and closets . Everything is in working order just like your house. Before the
child even enters the trailer they must first learn how to dial 911 on an actual
working phone and talking to a live person form the training team.
Children are taught how to dial and what to say. From there they enter the
house and go into the kitchen where a member of the Safety Trailer Team teaches
them about the fire hazards in the kitchen area . They then
proceed to the living room where another team member teaches them about the safety
and hazards of things in the living areas such as extension cords, fireplaces
& heaters. After that they proceed up to the 2nd floor
bedroom where an actual bedroom is set up complete with working everything.
Lights, smoke detector, alarm, windows etc...Each child takes turns laying in
bed and when a team member turns on the non-toxic smoke from a fog machine it
fills the room with smoke and the smoke detector goes off. From there a
child is instructed on how to roll out of bed and crawl through the smoke to
their escape point (which for training purposes is a door) [picture] and from
there assisted by other team members helped down a ladder to their designated
meeting place which we teach to be the mailbox.
